Cause of Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

Sunday, December 20th, 2009

The cause of IBS is still unknown. Some experts think IBS is a Motility Disorder.  A hyperactive or oversensitive gut is another possible cause of IBS. and the gut will react to changes influenced by stress, food and hormones.

Typically the bowel habit in IBS becomes chaotic. There is no surprised, therefore that it is considered a motility disorder. There is an abnormality in the transit time of ingested food.

Sometimes it is slower than normal causing constipation and other times it is faster causing diarrhoea. There are two types of IBS, diarrhoea predominant and constipation predominant. In some cases constipation and diarrhoea alternate. Stools in IBS can vary from watery and unformed to hard pellets.

Some say there is a link between diet and IBS.
Certain foods will trigger IBS symptoms. Just eating food stimulates intestinal muscle activity. This is a normal action and the most common is the Gastro colic reflex. This reflex is strongest after breakfast. Gastro-Colic reflex in IBS is strongest after fatty or large meals. This results in abdominal pains and or diarrhoea.

Food is not a cause of IBS but can trigger symptoms.

One suggestion is that it is a brain-gut disorder. The gut has a complex network of brain cells called the Enteric Nervous System. This “Brain of the Gut” is connected to the Brain. To understand IBS, experts think you need to understand how the Enteric Nervous System works.

The highest level of serotonin, a neuro-chemical is found in the gut. At present a lot of research is focused on gut serotonin receptors.

Contractions of the smooth muscles of the gut are affected by serotonin. High serotonin levels are found in diarrhoea and low levels in constipation.

Psychological factors such as anxiety, stress and depression can affect the gut. In addition psychological trauma such as physical, emotional and sexual abuse can affect the gut. Statistics show that there is a greater incidence of psychological trauma and disturbances in IBS. Addressing these issues may produce better long term results.

Gastroenteritis as a cause of IBS: IBS can develop is 20-30% of cases of severe gastro-enteritis. Escherichia coli, Salmonella shigella and Camplobacter jejuni are the most common organisms involved. Serotonin levels in gastro-enteritis is very high and in cases that develop IBS this high level continues.

In women with IBS, the hormones progesterone and estrogen vary during the menstrual cycle and the symptoms may fluctuate. The passage of food residue along the large gut is affected by the female hormones.

Yeast according to Prof. Jonathan Bostoff of The Meddlesex Hospital could be a possible cause of IBS. An overgrowth of Candida occurs when there is reduced levels of good bacteria, Lactobacilli and Bifidobactreia.

The Law of Attraction and Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

Sunday, October 4th, 2009

Irritable Bowel Syndrome affects up to 20% of people globally. Symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome are pains in the abdomen bloating and altered bowel pattern. Rectal symptoms such as irritation, pain or urgency can be present. There are also non-colonic symptoms.

Treatments of IBS can be divided into four categories. Patient education, medication, dietary modification and behavioural and psychological therapies are the four categories. Experts now agree that behaviour and psychological therapies are more likely to be effective that the other three.

The law of Attraction suggests that you attract into your life whatever you think about. This generalisation in simple terms means that your thoughts determine your destiny. An enormous momentum was built up after a documentary film, “The Secrets”, was shown on Oprah. It has been used for some time for personal growth, achievement and financial gain.

The question is: Does the Law of Attraction work in Medicine? A study done in 2004 on 314 elderly subjects and 196 young people associated with rumination and negative thoughts concluded that negative thoughts may be detrimental to health independently of effects. In Reikii, spiritual and personal development and all processes of healing is associated with removing negative Ki (Life Forces) from a person’s energy field, along with negative thoughts and feelings that have created it.

Negative thoughts, following job loss, relationship break ups and poor assessment, affect self-esteem. These people can feel worthless, insignificant, unsure and easily defeated. A person with high self-esteem has positive thoughts and their level of success is determined by these thoughts.

In Irritable Bowel Syndrome, does the Law of Attraction apply? What information is given to a person when first diagnosed with IBS? Here are a few. No one is quite sure why you have IBS.There is no one treatment that works for everyone. There is no abnormality in your gut. There is no cure. Stress plays an important role in IBS. You have to live with it. It is also an established fact that most IBS sufferers do not get adequate support from their health professionals.

Is it not likely these negative facts can affect the mind of IBS sufferers and lead to negative outcome? Treatments that focus on the mind are now recommended by experts. These include psychotherapy and cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). Moss-Morris at the University of Southampton, UK said, “Patients who have ongoing IBS symptoms might benefit from a simple, early intervention of CGT, a means of changing thought processes from negative to positive that has been shown to be helpful.” Dr .J. Lackner at the State University of New York reported that there was an improvement in 73% of patients with IBS after four short sessions of CGT and home study manual given to patients.

When a new treatment come on the market, an IBS patient will expectantly try it and may gain benefits. This improvement is short lived because in the mind, there is fixed the thought that there is no cure.

There are cases of refractory Irritable Bowel Syndrome patients following gut directed hypnotherapy living normal lives, having foods that previously cause severe IBS symptoms. When IBS becomes refractory no treatment works. Negative thoughts are plucked out of the subconscious mind during hypnotherapy and postive thoughts are added. This is the Law of Attraction working at its best. After hypnotherapy, positive thoughts produce positive results and before hypnotherapy, ingrained negative thoughts make symptoms severe.

Using the Law of Attraction, how can you improve your symptoms of IBS? Keep the positives in the forefront of your mind. Make them your reality and eventually your thoughts and feelings. Here are some positives. Your gut is normal. IBS does not lead on to other serious illnesses. Stress is a trigger. you can control stress. You can balance your lifestyle to improve your IBS. You can lead a full life even though you have IBS. Whatever IBS treatment you are on, keep your dreams and aspirations positive.
